Youth and Teen Services Associate

When children, teens, and caregivers visit Youth & Teen Services, we provide a welcoming environment and excellent customer service to help them find books, register for programs, and participate in activities and reading challenges. 

This opportunity is great for both experienced library workers interested in working directly with the public and those who want to learn to deliver public library youth services. We encourage those with prior experience using online apps (Microsoft Office/365, Beanstack reading program software, library catalog, library calendar) and/or quick learners to apply.

This position is part-time with an average work week of 20 hours. The hours generally include 2 evening shifts per week and every other weekend rotation.

Part-Time - Circulation Assistant I

Hours:  Part Time/Non-Exempt / 20 hours per work week. Messenger Library is an EEO employer.
Salary:  $15.00 / hour
Benefits:  Following 90 days of work employee is eligible for a prorated 56 hours of paid time off. 
This is an IMRF (Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund) pension position.
 
Job Description:
Under the supervision of the Circulation Services Department Head, performs a variety of tasks related to the circulation of materials and related library user services.  
Understands and administers library policies and procedures while safeguarding confidential and restricted information
Checks in returned, transited and new materials.
Performs basic reader’s advisory, places holds and assists patrons with checking out materials
Processes on-shelf hold list.  
Assists with shelving materials in all departments.
Answer patron questions regarding accounts.
Promotes the library through positive communication and engagement with users.  
Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications and Educational Requirements:
High School Diploma and or GED equivalence. Customer service experience and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. Applicants must have very flexible availability and will be required to work daytimes /evenings and every other weekend to meet Library patron service needs. Basic skills using computers and office equipment.  Must be able to push carts containing library materials.  
Preferred Candidates:
H.S. diploma / some college courses and / or Library Technical Assistant Certification (LTA) and prior public library work experience.
