11:00 a.m. – Until       Presentation on Experimental Writing (Large Meeting Room)

Cathy Borders is the author of A Suburb of Monogamy, The Tarot for Writing Project, and her latest, Robin Williams Is My Uncle: And Other Stories We Possess, is a work of autotheory on inherited trauma and feminism braided with an analysis of Robin Williams’s films. Her short fiction and academic essays can be found in various lit journals across the internet, she’s even won a few honorable mentions here and there. She has an MFA in Creative Writing from the New School in New York and a Bachelor’s degree in English literature and critical theory from the University of Iowa. She’s a book midwife, story therapist, and also the founder of The Republic of Letters and Water Street Writers.

The Republic of Letters is home to the Local Author Directory. They are a community writing organization dedicated to helping local authors get their books into the hands of local readers. They host Writers’ Networking events, an Open Mic, and the quarterly reading series, Water Street Writers, whose aim is to bring literature to life in the Fox Valley

Experimental writing often gets a bad rap, but at its core it simply asks: What can a book do? Every writer considers the best way to write their story—even for conventional writers, there are loads of questions to ask—but for some, traditional forms aren’t good enough. As language and its dogmas can be limiting, experimental writers look to extract meaning from irregular methods. They want to push the boundaries of what writing can do. They want a book that feels completely theirs. And while the term “experimental” denotes a kind of chaotic wild west, there are some much beloved and fun techniques that we will be discussing. This presentation is for anyone who’s ever wanted to dive deeper into the art of writing. It’s for the writers who want to play with language and all of its trappings. Join us for a foray into the art of Experimental Writing!
